(This is one of the pictures from my little photo shoot in the mountains I used for Kevin's birthday present!)
Laura and I
Ok,it has been way to long since I have posted an update! It took me several tries to remember my login info for my blog!
We have been busy, busy, busy as usual! Kevin busy with work and school for his millwright apprenticeship program, Chloe with school and her first year playing basketball, Josie learning new things every day and keeping us all on our toes, and I have been trying to keep up with the house, a new job and coaching Chloe's bb team!
Last weekend on Superbowl Sunday I was headed out to our friends, Kev was at work and the girls were in the car with me when I pulled up to an over-turned car in the road. I immediately stopped, told the girls to stay in the car, grabbed my phone and ran up to the scene. There was a couple, nearby neighbors that had also just arrived on their 4-wheeler when they heard it happen. I asked if they had called for help, the woman was just trying to get through. I then called our friends, told them what happened and they were on their way. In the meantime 2 other cars pulled up. One of which was a veterinary assistant. She asked if anyone had any towels, so I ran back to the car to check and see what I had. There were 2 boys in the crash. One was already getting out of the car when I first arrived and the other was still in the car. The one outside of the car was sobbing and saying he couldn't feel his fingers and had a large gash across the top of his hand. I turned around to see the other boy, all I could see was a bloody limp arm. I turned to look at the woman on the phone calling for help as if to ask...Is he alive? She whispered, he is concious, but in bad shape. I had the towel from my trunk and no one really looked like they were going to do anything, they were all in shock. So I crawled across the broken glass through the back window. The 18 year old, Mason tried to look up at me. His face looked like hamburger, a large flap of skin hanging off his forehead, and God only knows what coming out of the side of his head. I told him my name, applied the towel with pressure to control the bleeding, and began to talk with him. He had no idea what happened....Did I hit a car? Where am I? Is my friend Lucas ok? Am I going to be ok? I just did my best to keep him calm and keep him talking. It felt like an eternity, but help finally arrived. When they did and EMT crawled in next to me, I explained I have been applying pressure, gave him the kid's name and age, and he took it from there. As I crawled out, went to my friends, the tears were coming on... I had my friend come back to the car with me to get the girls as there was no way through to the other side of the accident. Told her to keep them looking the other way... I got back to my car, looked down for my keys and realized I had the kid's blood and my own all over my hands and arms. I grabbed clothing from a bag I had in the car for Goodwill and tried to clean myself the best I could. I got in the car and backed down the road. Ran up to a nearby house to see if I could park in their driveway, rang the door bell, no answer. Ran back to the car, looked in the sky and there was a helicopter coming in! I parked the car on the side of the road and ran back up to the girls and our friends. We stood for a few minutes and watched the helicopter land, then we hopped in their truck and went back to the house so I could clean up and get my head back together. What an experience! I called Dad and another friend that new we were headed out that way so they wouldn't be worried if the media got a hold of the crash. Good thing I did, it was on the news! After calling Mom and telling her the story, she (the microbiologist she is) said,"You need to call the ER! You have been exposed to his blood!" So I did, I talked to the ER, on-call dr., South Lane Fire and Rescue and the captain that was on the scene....the best answer I got was.... Just make an appointment with your primary care physician! Which I did, and 2 days later I was finally seen! In the appointment the nurse practioner brought in the head of occupational health services at the hospital and she informed me, just as mom did, that I should have been treated within hours of the exposure! I was pissed! So my bloodwork was done and they tracked down the boy flown to Riverbend and tested him for hepatitis and HIV! Scary stuff! So until we had his results, I was given 2 days of a hard core HIV drug. Expensive and nasty side effects! Yesterday I finally got good news that my results were clean and so were his! Today I am thankful the girls and I were not on that road just minutes earlier. I try to usually, but more so now, will I cherish every moment of every day!
